Step aboard history this Freedom Day!
On Tuesday, 31st March, Heritage Malta invites you to experience the iconic Freedom Day Regatta from Fort St Angelo in Birgu, whilst discovering the fort’s powerful past as HMS St Angelo, the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean stronghold.
This full-day programme, running from 9:00am to 7:00pm, allows visitors of all ages to explore the fort at their own pace, including through free guided tours that reveal its pivotal naval role and strategic importance under British rule. Learn what daily life was like within these formidable walls, which once housed a shore establishment of the Royal Navy in Malta and withstood intense bombardment during World War II.
A defining tradition of Maltese maritime heritage, the Freedom Day Regatta brings together skilled rowing teams from various cities and villages across Malta in a thrilling contest for the coveted Palju. The races take place in the creek below the fort, offering visitors an unrivalled panoramic view of the action unfolding across the Grand Harbour.
Throughout the day, children can participate in hands-on nautical- and naval-themed activities designed to spark curiosity and bring maritime history to life. The Sea Cadets will be adding further colour, immersion and insights into the period.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase on site, offering guests a chance to pause, relax, and soak in the historical surroundings. Admission costs €3, and tickets may be purchased online at
https://heritagemalta.mt/store/e1931/, from any Heritage Malta museum or site, and at the door on the day of the event. The last allowed entry is at 18:30.
