- **Event Description**: Please join us for a very special — and very timely — event on Friday night at 7pm when we welcome local author, activist, and Vallejo Sun reporter, Isidra Mencos, and her presentation “The Personal is Political: The Evolution of Spain and its Citizens from Dictatorship to Democracy.”

No stranger to political unrest, Isidra Mencos, Doctor in Hispanic Languages and Literature (UC Berkeley), has presented “The Personal is Political” to sold out audiences all over The Bay Area, and is now sharing it with us in Vallejo.  This important lecture and discussion examines the intersection between politics and private lives at a pivotal time in the history of Spain, with similarities happening in the US right now. Mencos grew up under the Franco dictatorship, and was 17 when Franco died in 1975. The transition to democracy took some years, but the cultural and sexual revolution happened fast. It was a time of hope, but also of political and social conflict. With democracy under threat around the world, Mencos reflects on the impact that authoritarianism has in every aspect of a person’s life, and the decades-long shadow it casts — and what we can learn from her experience. 
 
Isidra Mencos is the author of the award-winning Promenade of Desire—A Barcelona Memoir. Born and raised in Barcelona, she spent her twenties freeing herself from the oppression created by Franco’s dictatorship. Through salsa dancing, reading novels, and sex, she discovered her sensuality and her voice. Isidra holds a Ph.D. in Spanish and Latin American contemporary literature from UC Berkeley, where she taught Spanish language, literature, and creative writing. Her essays and articles have been published in Diálogo, WIRED, Chicago Quarterly Review, and Stirring Literary Journal, among others. Currently, Isidra is a frequent contributor to The Vallejo Sun, where she writes about businesses, nonprofits and people that bring something positive to Vallejo. 
 
Copies of Isidra’s memoir Promenade of Desire will be available for sale after the presentation.
