We have 10 seats for this class. Nine of them are filled!!
Let’s Find Your Perfect Pattern
For this initial class, all boards provided will be 2 ft x 2 ft. It will be sanded, primed and painted with
base coats. Once you select a pattern, I will have the design sketched on your board prior to the start
of class so you can just show up and paint! Future classes will give you the opportunity to learn to
grid and draw out patterns if you would like to learn. The goal for this class is to complete your
masterpiece by the end of the day!
Also, if you are painting your first barn quilt, then I highly recommend going with a simpler pattern to
start with. These are a lot of fun to make, but they do take a lot of time and patience. You can easily
design your own on a piece of graph paper. Grid patterns (like the Missouri Star) are easy. Point
based (like the Mariner's Compass) require a bit more concentration.
1. Go to the library and browse quilting books.
2. Go on the internet and google “barn quilt designs” or “barn quilt patterns”. There are endless
patterns out there. Keep in mind, if we all used the same pattern, but different color choices,
the differences would still be almost endless.
3. Go to Etsy. In the search bar type in barn quilts. Again, you will get many pattern designs.
Pinterest is another good site.
4. If you use Facebook, join Barn Quilt Addicts, or one of the other Barn Quilt sites, for great
information and designs.
5. Some patterns/designs are copyrighted, and occasionally we run into issues with those and I
can help figure out those situations.
How to Pick a Pattern for Your Barn Quilt
To pick a barn quilt pattern, consider how far away it will be viewed, as simpler, bolder patterns with
high-contrast colors are best for long distances. You can choose a meaningful traditional pattern, a
modern geometric design, or one inspired by family quilts. The quilt block pattern that you choose for
your barn quilt can be meaningful to you or as simple as a design that catches your eye. Or select a
design that reflects the beautiful scenery around you. Think about incorporating nearby colors from
the building, fence, or landscaping, and consider the size of your project, as larger quilts can handle
more complex designs.
Where to Hang Barn Quilts
Originally barn quilts were hung outside on barns, hence the name. However, as they have grown in
popularity one can see them on the side of garages, garden sheds, fences, homes, and even
businesses. They can be displayed just about everywhere. It creates eye-catching appeal to an
otherwise large block of white. Your front porch is a perfect spot to hang a smaller barn quilt. There
are numerous ways to hang your masterpiece without damaging the surface where it will hang and I
will include that information at the class.
If you want to enjoy it indoors, then your fireplace mantel, stairway, or living room wall are all options.
Just about anywhere you want to hang beautiful art will work. The choice is yours.
