Take on the highest summits of the Valencian Community in this unique 3-day hiking adventure! Inspired by the UK’s 3 Peaks Challenge, we’ll climb Aitana in Alicante, Alto de las Barracas in Valencia, and Penyagolosa in Castellón.
Day 1 – December 5: Arrival in Castell de Castells
We begin our adventure with a scenic drive into the interior of Alicante province. Our base for the first night will be the welcoming Hotel Rural Serrella in the mountain village of Castell de Castells. Here we’ll meet as a group, go over the details of the upcoming hikes, and enjoy a relaxing evening together before the challenge begins.
Day 2 – December 6: Summit of Aitana (1,558 m)
Our first peak is the highest mountain in Alicante: Aitana. Starting from Font de Partegás, we follow a beautiful circular route that winds through oak forests, limestone paths, and striking rock formations. Along the way we’ll enjoy spectacular views over the Serra de Aitana and down to the Mediterranean coast.
Distance: 10.8 km Elevation gain: 540 m Duration: approx. 4–5 hours
After completing the hike, we transfer northwards into the remote Rincón de Ademuz region and settle into our accommodation in Casas Bajas, a charming rural village.
Day 3 – December 7: Summit of Alto de las Barracas (1,838 m)
Today we climb to the highest point in the Valencian Community: Alto de las Barracas, also known as Cerro Calderón. Starting from the mountain village of Puebla de San Miguel, the route leads us through the Sierra de Javalambre with its wild highlands, ancient juniper trees, and open meadows. This is the longest stage of the challenge, and one that truly captures the sense of remoteness.
Distance: 20.9 km Elevation gain: 890 m Duration: approx. 6–7 hours
In the afternoon, we transfer into the province of Castellón and stay in Puertomingalvo, one of Spain’s most beautiful villages, at the cozy Hotel Mas de Cebrián.
Day 4 – December 8: Summit of Penyagolosa (1,813 m)
Our final challenge takes us up the most iconic peak of Castellón: Penyagolosa. Starting from Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, we follow forest trails and rocky paths up to the summit, where sweeping views extend over the Maestrazgo mountains and beyond. This climb is steep in sections, but incredibly rewarding — the perfect finale to the Valencian 3 Peaks Challenge.
Distance: 14 km Elevation gain: 600 m Duration: approx. 5 hours
After the hike we drive back to Valencia, where our adventure concludes.
