Yet throughout history, new ideas and forms of media that challenge prevailing cultural norms have often sparked fear and resistance. Games, comics, and other popular media have repeatedly been labeled as corrupting or dangerous influences—frequently leading to calls for censorship, regulation, or outright bans. This lecture and accompanying gallery exhibit examine five notable moments of moral panic, when society believed media had “gone too far” and posed a threat to youth. By tracing these episodes from the past to the present, the talk explores how protectionist impulses—sometimes well-intentioned, sometimes deeply overreaching—have disrupted creative expression and, in extreme cases, been leveraged as tools of social and political control. Together, these case studies reveal how earlier media panics helped shape the online culture wars of today.
