Try ice climbing!The American Alpine Club, Washington DC Section with support from Arc'teryx Tyson's Corner is excited to offer a fun-filled weekend of ice climbing mentorship by and for the women of the DC Section.This event will give new ice climbers a chance to develop their skills over two days of top roping on easy and moderate ice climbs in a supportive environment under the mentorship of experienced lady ice climbers.Location: Adirondack Park, Keene, New YorkDates: February 28-March 2, 2025Please note: Ice climbing is extremely dependent on the weather conditions needed to form solid, climbable ice. If ice conditions are poor or unsafe, event organizers may have to adjust the agenda or even cancel this event entirely.Participants will be required to organize their own travel, gear, and lodging.Participant PrerequisitesAmerican Alpine Club Membership. Registrants must be current AAC members as of the event date.Prior outdoor climbing experience: including the ability to tie-in, belay a top-rope climber, and awareness of outdoor climbing risks.If you're not currently a member, be sure to join the American Alpine Club, as you will be required to provide your Member ID number and membership expiration during registration.Agenda:Friday, February 28 (arrival date)8:00-10:00 pm: Check in and gear shakedown in the game room of ADK Trail Inn. We strongly recommend that all participants book rooms in this hotel to facilitate carpooling and coordination as we will hold gear checks and group meetings at the inn.When reserving your room, please indicate "American Alpine Club - DC Section" in comments for group rate which is applied at check out.How to Get ThereIt’s about an 8~9 hour drive from DC area. Seek directions to Keene, New York there are flights to Albany as well.Carpooling is recommended, and we will create a shared group chat and spreadsheet to coordinate sharing carpools and rooms after signup and as the event approaches.Cell service throughout the Adirondacks is also poor, so we recommend pre-downloading GPS maps for the area ahead of time.What to BringAlthough it looks intimidating, you can climb ice safely and comfortably with the right gear and clothing. Below is a brief overview of what you'll need to join us. After registration, organizers will reach out with more detailed and women-specific gear recommendations, and you will have the opportunity to ask individual questions of our team of lady mentors who will help ensure that have the gear you need to be safe and comfortable on the coldest of ice climbs. General Climbing/Safety GearHarness, belay device, helmet, extra locking carabiner/personal anchor are requiredSafety glasses are also recommended, they may be purchased from any hardware store such as Ace Hardware or Home Depot.Ice Climbing GearEach participant must have their own mountaineering boots, crampons, and technical ice tools.Although you can borrow gear from friends, we strongly encourage you to rent from Rock and Snow in New Paltz, NY. We'll be providing recommendations of what to rent, and you can pick it up on your drive up from DC and return it via their after hours drop box on your return trip.ClothingBe ready to dress for a day that includes periods of movement & high exertion as well as periods of standing in the cold. Arc'teryx has a good guide on layering for outdoor sports. We recommend against wearing cotton.A few recommendations specific to ice climbing:Bring multiple pairs of gloves. At least one light-medium weight pair for climbing, and a heavier pair for belaying.Bring a "belay parka" - a heavy insulated jacket to wear while belaying when you are not climbing or hiking to the cliffs.Food/WaterBring enough water and food (including snacks and lunch) for a full day of cragging.A thermos full of coffee or hot chocolate will be very beneficial.BackpackBring a 25-30L backpack capable of completely containing all of your needs for the day, including water/food, your belay jacket/extra layers, extra gloves, your climbing harness, and crampons.Please avoid smaller backpacks as you don't want to carry things in your arms.
