- **Event Description**: From the Red Scare to Cancel Culture: Dissent in Democracy Now and Then

How free is free speech—really? Join us for a thought-provoking panel exploring how dissent—the lifeblood of democracy—has been both celebrated and silenced across American history. From the Red Scares to today’s debates over “cancel culture,” our discussion will unpack the boundaries of free expression.

Panelists will unpack pivotal moments when loyalty oaths, censorship, and social pressure stifled speech—and ask how similar dynamics play out in our digital age. Together, we’ll examine historic persecution of those deemed “radical,” the role of the press (and modern social media algorithms) in defining who is heard and who is silenced, what counts as “un-American,” how fear can silence speech, and how to create a culture that protects free expression.

Join us on Wednesday, March 18, from 2-3:30 in the Delta College Lecture Theater (G160) for this engaging panel.

Panelists:
Amy French, PhD (Professor of History, Delta)
Barb Handley-Miller (Delta College Trustee, former Professor of Communication, Delta)
Lisa Lawrason, PhD (Professor of Political Science, Delta)
Mark Balawender, PhD (Associate Professor of Philosophy, Delta)
