Welcome to the Barigau Backyard Ultra event happening at Piazza Barigau on May 1, 2026 at 9:00 AM (Europe/Rome Timezone).
Barigau Backyard Ultra brings the world’s most social endurance format to the heart of Sardinia. Expect a welcoming community and a stunning loop around Monte Tisiddu. This is a test of patience, strategy, and spirit. Some come to chase records, others to see how many laps they can complete.
What is a Backyard Ultra?
A Backyard Ultra is a unique endurance format. Every hour, runners start together to complete one loop, which is exactly 6.706 km (4.167 miles). You have one hour to finish the loop and be back in the starting corral before the bell rings again. Finish early? Rest, eat, stretch. Miss the bell? You’re out.
The race continues until the last runner completes a lap - the last one standing.
The Setting
Ulassai is a Blue Zone mountain village known for its longevity, magestic nature, world class rock climbing, and creative soul. Running here means joining a community that values health, connection, and the joy of movement.
The loop itself captures everything special about Ulassai. Expect mixed terrain with a bit of everything: rocky sections that keep you alert with mountain backdrop, meditative and shaded forest path, and a short stretch through the village where you’ll hear the daily activity of village life. It’s a loop that rewards focus and rhythm rather than pure speed.
Basecamp
The heart of the race is Ulassai’s town square. A gathering place where runners, crew, and locals come together between loops. It’s where you’ll refuel, rest, and hear the bell that marks each new hour. You can set up your own small area with a tent or chair, and you’ll be surrounded by friendly faces doing the same.
Aid Stations
You’ll never be far from support. Our aid team will provide water, electrolytes, fruit, soup, and snacks throughout the race. You’re also welcome to bring your own nutrition and set it up near your resting spot for quick access between laps.
Medical & Safety
A medical team will be on-site for the entire event. The course is marked with reflective tape and glow sticks for safe night running.
Weather & Gear
Ulassai sits in the mountains at around 800 metres, so weather can shift quickly. Expect sun during the day and cooler air at night. Bring sunscreen, layers, and a reliable headlamp.
After the Race
When the final bell rings and the last runner finishes, the celebration begins. We’ll gather for a community dinner, award ceremony, and raise a glass to everyone who ran, volunteered, and cheered!
