On June 2nd, we’ll begin at Gas Works Park, one of Seattle’s most unique and beloved public spaces. Once the site of a coal gasification plant that powered much of the city in the early 20th century, the land was transformed in the 1970s into a community park rather than being erased from the landscape. The rusting towers and pipes that remain have been painted, preserved, and reimagined as industrial sculpture — a striking reminder of Seattle’s industrial past now living alongside playfields, picnic lawns, and lakeside paths. Today, Gas Works is the setting for countless gatherings, including Seattle’s largest Fourth of July fireworks show, where the backdrop of Lake Union and the downtown skyline creates an unforgettable spectacle.

Our route begins with a climb to the top of the park’s grassy knoll, where an artful sundial is set into the concrete, inviting visitors to mark both time and place. From here, we’ll head east along the edge of Lake Union, the water alive with kayaks, seaplanes, and sailboats. This shoreline walk carries us toward the University District before we turn uphill and climb into Wallingford.

Wallingford, a neighborhood that grew quickly in the early 20th century, has long been a haven for working-class families who wanted both proximity to the city and a sense of independence. Craftsman bungalows line the streets, many lovingly maintained with lush gardens that spill color in June. As we weave back and forth across the ridge, the streets tell stories of community pride, where neighbors balanced convenience to downtown with a life distinctly their own.

Descending gradually back toward the water, we’ll complete our loop with a well-earned stop at Mas Café. Known for hearty food and cool drinks, it’s the perfect place to recharge. Their breakfast burritos are legendary — enough to keep you fueled for the whole day. This trek offers both history and heart: an industrial site reborn into art and play, and a neighborhood that has held fast to its identity even as the city around it has changed.

We'll park in the big parking lot at Gasworks Park and begin our trek at 9:30 am. There is usually plenty of parking on a weekday morning, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry, no doggies are allowed at any Tenderfoot Adventures events as per our insurance policy. We all love our fur babies, and I am sure that yours is amazing as well, but alas, there are no doggies allowed at any of our events.
