- **Event Description**: Join the Desert Museum on our Río Sonora Heritage Tour! We'll venture south of the border to Sonora, Mexico to explore this agrarian region. We'll visit areas that are still very much as it was hundreds of years ago, with farmers and ranchers thriving in the fertile valley where we will immerse ourselves over four adventurous days visiting missions in the region, enjoying local cuisine, and spending quality time with wonderful people that share gracious hospitality. Highlights include visits to the missions: Magdalena, Cucúrpe, Banámichi, Aconchi, and Baviácora. We will also be treated to a performance by a folklorico dance group, and to a lecture on the processing of the miraculous agave, with a mezcal tasting included!

Led by Jesús García and Stephen Bernier. Jesús brings a wealth of knowledge not only of the flora and fauna indigenous to the Sonoran Desert, but of the many cultures which have and still call this place home. A master storyteller, he is also a master at identifying plant and animal species, describing their preferred growing or breeding habits and explaining their environmental connections to one another and to us. Bernier is the owner of South of the Border Tours. Stephen has organized and produced tours of the American Southwest and Mexico since 1993 for the University of Arizona Elderhostel/Roads Scholar Program, Arizona Historical Society, Scottsdale Sister City, Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tohono Chul, Portland Art Museum, Heard Museum Guild, as well as various other museums and universities.
