Dear hikers and sunset lovers,
During this time of the year, sunset hike is the best choice for nature lovers due to the high temperatures during the summer season.
We will hike this time in North of Lebanon between the cedars of Becharre and Baakafra (the birth place of St Charbel).
Becharre in Syriac origin, "Beit Shary", meaning "begin" or "strength and stability", in Aramaic the house of truth and it was known as Buissera by the Crusades.
A former Phoenician village where cedar wood was exploited in antiquity, Bcharre rises to 1400m in North Lebanon, in the heart of a majestic and fierce nature. The village, with a rather urban character, stands out above all for its exceptional natural environment marked by the presence of two UNESCO World Heritage sites, namely the millennial forest of the Cedars of God and the Holy Valley of Qadisha, home to meditation and asceticism since the beginning of the Christian era during the 7th century.
Aramaic was spoken in Bsharri well into the 19th century. As a result, Bsharri natives developed an unmistakably strong accent that lasts to this day.
Bekaa Kafra is a village located in the Bsharri District. It is the birth town of Saint Charbel. Bekaa Kafra has an altitude ranging from 1500 m to 2000 m at its highest point, making it the highest village in Lebanon and one of the highest in the Middle East.
The name Bekaa Kafra comes from the Syriac language and means "mountain crack village"
We will start this beautiful and moderate hike from Becharre at an altitude of 1950 m to the Village of Bekaakafra at an altitude of 1800 m passing by cherry orchards and amazing views of the mountains surrounded by us as well as the qadisha valley. We will have the chance to eat delicious cherries on our way.
Before reaching the village of St Charbel, we will pass by a beautiful location near St Charbel statue at an altitude of 1850 m to check the amazing sunset hiding behind the clouds. Then, after the sunset a 40 mins hike will take us to the village of Bekaakafra.
After the sunset hike, we will have the opportunity to visit the wine & apple festival in Baakafra square organized by the ARD association in cooperation with the municipality of Baakafra which is an annual event promoting Lebanon's wine heritage, not specific to Bekaakafra, but rather the broader national wine sector including the Bekaa valley. It's a cultural, agricultural, and tourist activity designed to highlight the entire wine production process and encourage participation in the sector. Also, it features apple picking, local products (mouneh), food, and entertainment.
So, don't miss this event.
