Serviceberry Book Discussion

Discussion of The Serviceberry--Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer will be held February 25, 2026, 4 p.m., in the Sanctuary

Indigenous scientist Robin Wall Kimmerer (author of Braiding Sweetgrass) released a new book in 2025, The Serviceberry.
The legend of the serviceberry tree is rooted in its historical significance among indigenous peoples of North America. Its name is believed to originate from the tree's blooming time, which signaled the thawing of the ground, allowing burial services after harsh winters. Thus, it is associated with the "clock" function of the tree.

As Kimmerer harvests serviceberries, alongside birds in early spring, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the "gift economy." As spring approaches, come and share your thoughts about this philosophy, and the interconnected web of our existence.
