Learn wood carving, fire building, and more!About this EventJoin Owl Eyes Wilderness Survival as we welcome Dug North for this exciting experience! Dug North is a well known bushcrafter and survivalist most recently known for his appearance on Season 12 of the History Channel's "ALONE". This class will cover many aspects of his experience surviving in Africa, including wood carving skills, fire making, knot tying, and hearing his survival story. You may even get a chance to eat a scorpion like he did!Dug will lead us through everything we need to know to safely wield a carving tool in the wilderness. You will learn all of the safety skills needed, sharpening, and techniques on wood carving. He will then teach us the art of fire making as students make a "1 match" fire and later transition to making fire by rubbing sticks together! The core focus of this class will include making a bow drill set under Dug's supervision and guidance. The bow drill is a life-saving survival tool that has been used all over the world to create fires and drill holes for various projects, and has even seen use in ancient dentistry!You will learn various other skills and survival techniques, including a few bushcraft knots, plant selection for crafting materials, and safety considerations while survival in the wilderness. These skills are useful in any enviroment, from woodlands, to islands, to deserts.The last hour of class will be dedicated to a Q&A about Dug's survival experience.Open to ages 14 and up. As a kid, he was fascinated by the wilderness survival books of Ellsworth Jaeger, Bradford Angier, and Tom Brown Jr.Dug earned an undergraduate degree in Anthropology at the University of Vermont, and spent several years working as an archeologist. Over the years, Dug’s occupations and personal interests have focused on how to make things. In recent years, his love of making things has found expression in the field of ancestral skills. He has learned to make fire, containers, cordage, traps, shelters, hunting weapons, and stone tools.Dug was selected for Season 12 of The History Channel survival show, ALONE. He survived on his own in the Great Karoo Desert of South Africa with 10 items.
