Directed by Phyllida Lloyd and based on the iconic songs of ABBA, this musical follows bride-to-be Sophie (Seyfried) after she secretly invites three men (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård) to her wedding in hopes of figuring out who her father is. Forced to confront her past and the state of her crumbling inn, Sophie’s mother Donna (Streep) relies on her two best friends, the Dynamos (Baranski and Walters), to keep her afloat.
One of the highest-grossing films of 2008 (and to this day, remains one of the all-time top earners featuring women over 50), Mamma Mia! proved for the umpteenth time that films by and for women can be just as much of a box office draw as any other big studio blockbuster.
