Never been to an In The Round? These concerts focus on the stories behind the music, and the songs themselves. The music is stripped back to allow listeners to really experience the songs at the most authentic level. What it also means is that we won't be having 'sets' per se - all four songwriters will be on stage together the whole time!
Gillian Nicola (Host)
“Nicola delivers warm, familiar, folksy Canadiana — but her powerhouse vocals make for a listening experience that's entirely refreshing.” (Exclaim!, 2016) The first thing that strikes listeners about Hamilton’s Gillian Nicola is the strength of her vocals. This rising singer/songwriter calls on influences of folk and Americana to bring a sound both unique to her and that honours her diverse taste.
Abigail Lapell is a Canadian folk noir songwriter based in Toronto, Ontario. A fluid lyricist and multi-instrumentalist, Lapell draws freely from folk-roots, indie and punk-rock traditions. She received the Ontario Arts Council's 2016 Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award, and NOW Toronto named her one of its "musicians to watch" in 2017.
Described by No Depression as a "consummate singer and songwriter with a wholly unique sound," Dana Sipos' captivatingly nuanced songs are filled with a hypnotic surrealism and a wild wind. She tours by bicycle, tall ship, canoe, train. Her last album, Roll Up the Night Sky, released on underground Nashville label Muddy Roots Records, was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award in the Pushing the Boundaries category. A new album, Trick of the Light, will be released in early 2018.
Rory Taillon is a songwriter who really has something to say through his music. The 28-year-old Oshawa, Ontario resident demonstrates a lyrical mastery that belies his years and shatters formulaic conventions. This is deftly matched with a powerful, bluesy musical style that sets him apart from his contemporaries. Rory recently released his newest alternative folk album, "Only Whispers."
