Depending on who you were and how you died, your body could become sacred, evidence, punishment, or even a public spectacle. Some people were buried with enormous care. Others were dissected in front of an audience, their bodies used to teach anatomy long after their punishment was supposed to be over.This lecture looks at how we got there. Religion is often blamed for standing in the way of anatomy, but religious belief also helped make dissection possible. It shaped when the dead could be opened and what could happen to the body afterwards. In the anatomy theatre, that body could teach people about medicine while also serving as a final punishment. Dissection became a way of learning from the dead, but also a very public demonstration of who had authority over them.The history of anatomy is full of these contradictions. The dead taught the living how the human body worked, but their bodies were also displayed and used in ways that still raise uncomfortable questions about dignity and consent. Today, students can dissect a body virtually without human remains ever entering the room, which raises a different question: what do we lose when the dead disappear from the way anatomy is taught?Dr. Myriam Nafte is a forensic anthropologist and Adjunct Clinical Professor at McMaster University, where she researches dissection anatomy and the afterlife of human remains in medical education.
