Get your cryptogram decoders ready! Because Neon Dreams is presenting David Fincher's modern neo-noir masterpiece, Zodiac — an immaculately detailed procedural chronicling the obsession and exhaustion that follow the endless pursuit of the Zodiac killer, who terrorized Bay Area residents and law enforcement from 1968 to 1983.
Although released theatrically on film, Zodiac was one of the earliest examples of an entirely shot-on-digital feature — a move that raised initial doubts on whether the format could effectively recreate the 1970s. Those concerns were squashed when Fincher released one of the most convincing and immersive period pieces of its time. Our aim is to present a well-loved 35mm print of an equally well-loved film to see if time has been kind to a living format, and whether its natural degradation will make it feel even more authentic to its era.
So this holiday season, come cozy up in San Francisco with Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chloë Sevigny, Brian Cox, Dermot Mulroney, Donal Logue, Elias Koteas, and a dozen other outstanding character actors. Whether you've seen it once, a hundred times, or are here for the first time, it's the perfect occasion to celebrate a film that we're declaring an incidental Christmas classic. (BRENDAN ROSS)
