Together, these ambitious works explore the politics of body, voice, and liberation, confront systems of control, and demand of us the courage it takes to reimagine and redefine these systems.Concreamus is Toronto's premier youth and young adult new music choir. The piece is a reaction to Jena Osman's incredible book "Corporate Relations," a collection of poems that follows the historical trajectory of corporate personhood in the United States. The five movements combine language taken from landmark Supreme Court Cases with words from ventriloquism textbooks.Parturition is an extended work for choir, piano, and electronics, featuring texts by Mina Loy and Lola Ridge alongside excerpts from Psalm 22. The piece explores abstract depictions of the painful and transformative experience of childbirth and creation, drawing parallels to the artist’s experience—both of which involve journeys and processes that are often romanticized and faced quietly inward.Parturition moves through women’s experiences as well as the artist’s own journey, considering how identity is formed through pain and a sustained commitment to process. It reflects on the unromantic and unavoidable nature of that process, the sense of release that comes with accepting creation as something to nurture but not control, and the discomfort involved in critically challenging one’s identity within any creative pursuit.
