About the event

Mixed Media Washi Collage, with Loree Ovens
Take collage to another level with Japanese paper using a variety of substrates and surface embellishments!

About this Event

Using fine Heritage Washi and other Japanese papers, learn various ways of attaching elements, through collage, to each other and onto different surfaces. Discover how your substrate, whether it is paper, wood, or canvas, influences the process, and your results.

Practicing collage is a skill that also helps to improve your sense of design, and informs any other art practices you may have. In this workshop, you will create small works with washi through experimentation, drawing, painting, and stitching. Loree will also introduce the basic techniques for working with konnyaku, a traditional starch used to toughen and add textural memory to washi.

You are welcome to bring in previously-made works on paper to alter and incorporate into the workshop projects.
All necessary materials and supplies will be provided.

Participants are asked to bring:
  • an apron, or dress to get messy
  • a notebook and pen (optional)
  • your lunch!

This workshop is beginner friendly.
Ticket costs include the workshop fee of $129.50, plus Eventbrite fees and HST for a total cost of $157.34

About Loree Ovens:

Loree has extensive experience as an arts instructor, drawing on her own work in a variety of media. As a printmaker she specializes in intaglio techniques to create works on paper that are reminiscent of old documents, aged textiles or barkcloth. She works with Washi in both printmaking and painting; often combining surface design techniques for textiles. Loree’s fascination with line, pattern, and architecture continue to inspire her work.

After studying Fashion Technique and Design at PEI’s Holland College, Loree continued her studies at Sheridan College, SOCAD, earning an arts diploma with a major in fabrics. Loree had a two-year residency in the textile studio at the Harbourfront Craft Studio and later earned a BFA in Printmaking from OCADU.

Loree has shown in national and international exhibitions in Canada, Japan, United States, Taiwan, Australia and Scotland. Her work is part of both private and public collections including the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Art Gallery of New South Wales and SGC International.

Loree is represented by Open Studio, Propeller Art Gallery, Guildworks and Craft Ontario.
