Jerad is a mining town in Morocco where coal extraction, although officially halted in 2001, continues informally to this day. L’Mina recreates the current work in informal mining pits using a set design created in collaboration with the town’s residents, who perform in their own roles.Sambizanga (1972), A film by Sarah Maldoro, presented with U of T Community Engaged Learning Program (New College) the Centre for Caribbean Studies, and the Caribbean Solidarity Network. A poignant and revolutionary feat of political cinema, Sambizanga tells the story of the rise of Angola’s independence movement, featuring nonprofessional actors who were behind the anticolonial resistance themselves. The film traces the spark of the country’s uprising as a young woman searches for her husband who has just been arrested by Portuguese authorities. What follows is her journey from the outskirts of Luanda toward the city’s center, unfolding a compassionate and loving chronicle of the role and resilience of women in the global struggle for liberation.This venue is wheelchair accessible and has gender neutral, wheelchair accessible washrooms.
