Designed for beginners and open to all experience levels, the course guides participants through the foundational rhythms, ensemble dynamics, and cultural history of maracatu while learning to play traditional instruments such as the alfaia, caixa, agbê, and gonguê. Through weekly rehearsals, participants build rhythm, coordination, and confidence while learning how each instrument contributes to the collective groove.Beyond musical skills, the course emphasizes the communal spirit at the heart of maracatu. Participants experience the energy of playing in a percussion ensemble, developing listening skills, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of the cultural roots of the music. By the end of the program, students will have learned core rhythms and arrangements and will be prepared to participate in group performances or continue developing their practice within the Maracatu Mar Aberto community.This worskhop is hosted by Maracatu Mar Aberto.PARTICIPANT AGE: 12+NO EXPERIENCE REQUIREDClasses are held every Tuesday from March 10 to May 12 at 225 Geary Avenue.Drop in classes are $30 each, or take the whole 10 week course for just $200!ABOUT THE ARTIST ORGANIZATIONMaracatu Mar Aberto is a Toronto-based community percussion group playing maracatu de baque virado and other rhythms derived from the traditions of northeastern Brazil. Translated to English as the Open Sea, the name represents the aggregated influences that have traveled from Africa to Brazil to Toronto and beyond. Founded in 2010, the group has played on streets and stages across Ontario and Quebec bringing rhythm, song and movement. A living tradition of Afro-Brazilian rhythm in a local context, working collectively on the artistry and heritage that is maracatu de baque virado.
