Join us for an evening of dancing to live music!
The Kosa community invites you to a welcoming environment where you can learn how to dance right on the floor. No prior experience is required. No partner is needed. Dances will be called and led by a facilitator, and you can arrive early to participate in a focused learning session to practice the dances before the social event.
The music will be performed by Kryva Kosa and friends, featuring a selection of traditional folk dance tunes from Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary, Lithuania, Finland, and more.
There is a long, immeasurable tradition across cultures of gathering to dance to socialize, connect, and even move through the seasons in ceremony. There are many wonderful members of the Kosa Folk Arts community who have helped keep the spirit of European village dance an active, living tradition within the organisation, including folks from Balfolk Toronto, Csango Uchained, and the Kryva Kosa folk band.
Dance socials have been an especially important element of Ukrainian folk revival and preservation not only in Ukraine, but across the diaspora. And it's part of the Kosa community's lineage in Toronto!
As Kosa continues to spin and lengthen this cultural thread from within their group, they thank and acknowledge those who have enthusiastically shared their research in Ukrainian village dance and taught them, such as Stephania Woloshyn of the Lemon Bucket Orkestra from Toronto and Anastasia Fyk of the Steppe Kolektyv from Winnipeg.
