- **Event Description**: Renowned gh3* architect and 2026 RAIC Gold Medal recipient Pat Hanson on meaningful, engaging, and enduring architecture.About this EventWhether infrastructural in character or accommodating a community-oriented program, architecture should aspire to exceed the purely functional. Each project begins with an architectural proposition: an idea shaped by the knowledge, experience, and preoccupations developed through previous work, while remaining firmly grounded in the material, environmental, and social conditions of its new context. The development of a durable architectural idea requires sustained attention throughout the design and construction process. Its significance is not established at the moment of conception, but through continual testing, refinement, and translation into material and spatial form. The architectural idea must remain sufficiently resilient to guide decisions while also being open to transformation through the realities of making.Architecture has the capacity to interrupt habitual patterns of perception and use. It can draw attention to the everyday by making familiar experiences newly visible, engaging the senses and altering our understanding of place. From the perspective of my practice, and particularly through work within Canadian cities and landscapes, this presents a significant challenge. Much of our building culture remains oriented toward the efficient delivery of functional requirements, often leaving limited space for architecture to operate beyond utility. The role of architecture, then, is partly to resist this condition—to identify within each project a particular quality of site, material, structure, or spatial organization through which an idea can become both precise and tangible. The clarification of that idea can create a moment in which architecture exceeds the habitual: where the ordinary is made perceptible, and where the functional is transformed into an experience that is more meaningful, engaging, and enduring.Speaker Bio:Pat Hanson is a founding Principal of gh3*, where she has led the firm in establishing a reputation for design integrity across institutional, infrastructural, public realm, and residential projects. Her work is distinguished by its ability to forge meaningful connections between architecture, landscape, and the urban realm. Under her leadership, gh3* has grown steadily in capacity and recognition. Central to this achievement is her commitment to mentoring and directing a deeply talented, interdisciplinary team. Hanson is the recipient of seven Governor General’s Medals in Architecture. In 2026, she was awarded the RAIC Gold Medal, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s highest honour, recognizing a lifetime of outstanding achievement and enduring contribution to Canadian architecture. In 2024, she received the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her significant contributions to Canadian architecture.
