This lecture takes the audience on a condensed journey through the history and the development of the brooch: from its early Bronze Age forms as a fibula, through the era of medieval breast pins and the baroque Sévigné-brooches to the political and social statements of buttons and badges and finally to the brooch as one category of contemporary jewellery. But primarily this short excursion into the history of the brooch focuses on the following point: to realize the roots and different stages of function and meaning through which the brooch has gone and points out why it is important to integrate the design of the backside and the pin mechanism on contemporary brooches. Daniela Malev has written the book “To the Point – pin mechanisms and brooch back design” which has been extremely well-received by contemporary jewellers worldwide. She has been invited internationally to give workshops on this subject. In this lecture she will also introduce some contents of her book.
