L'institut répond également aux préoccupations liées aux déterminants sociaux de la santé pour les membres des communautés africaines et noires du Canada.Depuis le 1er avril 2019, les dirigeants des associations afro-canadiennes noires, petites et grandes, ont entamé une discussion intitulée « Meeting of the Minds » afin de développer une approche cohésive pour l'unification, la recherche, les politiques, la planification et la défense des droits des noirs. Les participants ont convenu qu'après ces réunions, toutes les initiatives devraient avoir une portée nationale et créer plus d'opportunités de participation pour les personnes d'ascendance africaine au Canada.L'idée d'un Institut canadien pour les personnes d'ascendance africaine (ICPAA) a été envisagée comme une opportunité pour les Afro-Canadiens et les Noirs, de travailler ensemble pour identifier un certain nombre de priorités en matière d'infrastructure et parvenir à un consensus. Ces priorités comprennent la mobilisation dans les domaines de la santé, de l'éducation, de la justice, de la gouvernance, de la responsabilité et de l'autonomie financière. L’objectif principal de l'ICPAA est d’obtenir des résultats positifs pour la communauté afro-canadienne en créant une structure dans laquelle la communauté puisse développer ses compétences et les conserver à l'échelle nationale, au lieu d'adopter une approche locale et individualisée du développement des ressources et des prestations de services à la clientèle. L'ICPAA est destiné à soutenir des initiatives qui valorisent, soutiennent et favorisent un développement familial africain fort tout en intégrant la diversité de nos communautés (francophone, anglophone, biraciale, africaine continentale, afro-caribéenne, afro-latino, jeunesse, aînés, homme, femme , transgenre, non binaire ou intersexuel et ayant des capacités différentes). L'ICPAA permettra de nous exprimer clairement avec une voix cohérente et unifiée à l'échelle nationale."
