The height of Roaring Twenties decadence is seen through the eyes of observer Nick Carraway (Sam Waterston), who finds himself dazzled by the mansions, denizens and parties of a Long Island season. Over the course of the summer, Nick looks on as self-made millionaire neighbour Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford) yearns for Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow), the lost love of his youth. F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the great chroniclers of the enthralling beauty and vapid cruelty of the idle rich, and the insolent flappers, bobbed hair, and rumpled linen suits of this period piece conjure the look and spirit of the Jazz Age.
 
 
Considered the Great American Novel’s most faithful adaptation, a screenplay by Francis Ford Coppola and award-winning cinematography by Douglas Slocombe translate the literary classic’s rich symbolism and innovative narrative structure to the screen, with production design by John Box (Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago). Costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge’s Oscar-winning interpretation of the era’s androgynous and preppy style features many glittering authentic 1920s pieces, but this is a movie just as celebrated for men’s style: then-emerging designer Ralph Lauren got a big break contributing wardrobe for the male cast from his Polo line, and the custom tailored three-piece suits for leading man Redford. The movie’s look proved incredibly influential on fashion at the time, inspiring designers to look to the 1920s for inspiration.
