The fast and furiously funny screwball comedy classic!

 

Unscrupulous newspaper editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) learns that his star reporter and former wife Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) is engaged to a boring insurance man (Ralph Bellamy)—naturally, he plots sabotage. With the clock ticking on a wrongful execution, can she triumph in a battle of wills with her old sparring partner and, more importantly, resist the possibility of a scoop?

 

Based on the hit stage play The Front Page, Howard Hawks directs Charles Lederer’s breathless screenplay with frenzied abandon. Verbal wit, slapstick, social satire, farce and absurdity combine with romantic comedy, gender politics, and commentary on corruption in the justice system. From press room card games to jailhouse interviews, the fast-talking hijinks are an early example of the overlapping dialogue that influenced Altman, Sorkin and many others.
