It is all but inevitable that our aging clients will experience any or all of these conditions:  osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and spondylosis. Join us for a rich and fact-filled exploration of these common conditions, with special emphasis on how massage therapy can be modified for safe and effective work.

 Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to…

Identify and describe the definition, demographics, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms and common treatment options for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and spondylosis
Discern the variables that inform clinical decision-making for massage therapy for clients who live with these disorders
Predict appropriate adaptations and modifications that clients/patients who live with these disorders might need
Research

A full bibliography will be provided with the attendee handout. This includes primary and secondary sources with a special emphasis on information that is relevant for massage therapists.

 Target Audience

This class will be useful for RMTs of all levels of experience.

Communicate effectively: this course will help attendees to have useful conversations with their clients about their health.
Function in a client-centered manner: This course emphasizes that each person’s experience is unique, and clinical decisions must be made on a case-by-case (and day-by-day) basis.
Practice in a manner consistent with current developments in the profession: This class will bring attendees up to date on current understandings of the conditions under discussion, and any research about massage in those contexts as well.
Use an evidence-informed approach in your work: This class will use the best available recent information, and will provide attendees with links to all available resources.
Interact effectively with other professionals: This class will help attendees identify key decision points for clinical practice, so that they can have productive consultations with other healthcare providers if that is necessary.

Ruth Werner is an award-winning educator, writer, and retired massage therapist who loves to share her interest in the role of bodywork for people who live with health challenges.

Her textbook, A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology is now in its 7th edition. She is a columnist for Massage and Bodywork, and she teaches continuing education workshops in research and pathology virtually and in person all over the world.
