- **Event Description**: Sugar and Jazz is BACK! For over 40 years, Sugar and Jazz made the 'Music Memories Were Made Of'. Sadly we lost our founder and band leader, Frank Lorango in November of 2023. In an effort to keep Mr. L's memory and the music of the great Big Band Era alive, the group is re-forming under the direction of Sugar & Jazz alum, Kimberly Saben. 

Sugar & Jazz is a full big band orchestra composed of young musicians (and adult hobbyists) ages 12 & Up from all over WNY. They perform the music of the great Big Band Era of the 30s & 40s. The music of greats like Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and more!

Sugar & Jazz is a unique experience for young musicians, playing music that's a little different than what they would typically play in school, but teaching the same fundamentals they would learn playing together in an ensemble. Since there are no auditions, Sugar & Jazz gives young musicians performance and playing opportunities they may not have had otherwise. Playing in the group is a great way to make friends from other schools, and learning professionalism and teamwork.

Sugar & Jazz has performed in many venues throughout WNY and Canada and has even traveled to and performed at Disneyland! Future plans for the band include performances throughout the community, but also on educational trips out of state.

About 'Ms Saben': Kimberly Saben graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a bachelor's degree in Music Education with a concentration in Jazz Studies. She is currently the band leader of the Alex Rene Big Band and a Sugar & Jazz alum. Ms. Saben has worked as a marching band instructor at Akron Central Schools and currently works for Mount Saint Mary Academy. She loves the music of the big band era and keeping it alive in the hearts and minds of young people! 

This open rehearsal is open to anyone interested in joining Sugar & Jazz or folks that just want to listen and reminisce. Bring your instruments if you're interested in playing! We will be in the Fellowship Hall in the basement of the Deerhurst Presbyterian Church on Colvin.
