Messiah Sing

On Sunday, December 14th, at 3:00 pm, a very special
event will be held at UCCT- our 2nd Annual Messiah Sings! Don’t miss this exciting special musical event for the Advent and Christmas season. Part One of Handel’s Messiah, featuring professional soloists, directed by Allan Conway. Join us to sing Handel’s immortal music, or just to listen. Scores will be available if you do not have your own. Open to the public- invite your friends! A free-will offering will be received. Here’s a few interesting facts about the music.

Handel wrote 40 operas during his time in London, and eventually, the public was ready for something new. He turned to the sacred oratorio, in which the music is presented in concert form without sets or costumes. He ended up writing 25.

Accustomed to working under a deadline for all those operas, Handel wrote Messiah in an astonishing three weeks. The original manuscript (now kept in The British Museum in London) is a mess.

The first performance in Dublin was a benefit for prisoners’ debt relief and two hospitals. The choir was 16 men and 16 boys. 700 people attended- men were asked to leave their swords at the door in order to make more room in the hall.
