Using the classic Magic Shop and its recovery-informed adaptation, the Sobriety Shop, participants are invited to actively examine the internal “deals” that keep them stuck—and to consciously renegotiate them.Rather than focusing on insight alone, this method brings choice into action. Participants externalise qualities that no longer serve them—such as denial, fear, resentment, shame, or avoidance—and are invited to choose what they are willing to give up in order to receive what they truly want: courage, acceptance, self-compassion, honesty, emotional regulation, or connection. The Shopkeeper role makes the cost of change visible, supporting ownership without blame.In the Sobriety Shop, the structure is carefully adapted for addiction and recovery work. Clients explore how old survival strategies once protected them, while also confronting how those same patterns now limit freedom. Emphasis is placed on choice as a moment-to-moment practice, reinforcing recovery-supportive roles such as accountability, patience, self-leadership, and willingness to ask for help.The final phase, Sealing the Deal, anchors choice into commitment.
