Hedgelaying is a craft that preserves the past and protects the future. It is a skill set that has been practised for hundreds of years, passing from generation to generation due to its importance in agriculture, nature, our environment and our heritage.
Mismanagement of hedgerows leads to degradation or collapse which, in turn, reduces safe shelter for wildlife
A laid hedge provides a stock proof barrier, safe travel corridors and a dense habitat for a wide range of nature’s most fragile creatures
Hedgerows are also a source of vital food for a myriad of mammals, birds and insects
Hedgerows are often called home by nesting birds, hibernating hedgehogs and dormice
The correct management of our hedgerows is essential if we are to conserve our wildlife and landscape for future generations.
On this day you will learn all the basic skills so that you can lay your own hedge, and become part of this ancient tradition.
The day starts at 9.00am and finishes at approximately 4pm. Please bring your own lunch. Wear clothes and shoes and footwear that is appropriate to being outside all day. £60
