The Memorial is about a five minute walk across a field. Transport is available. ( There is very little shade and it can be very hot, so please bring hats, umbrellas and water).


Double Hills is the annual commemoration to mark some of the first casualties of Operation Market Garden. On 17th September 1944, 23 men who were destined for Arnhem, lost their lives when Glider RJ113 crashed into a meadow called Double Hills near Paulton. 

A few years ago, the Glider Pilot Regiment Society with Glider Pilot Veteran, John Setter, a presented Peter with a new GPR flag which replaced the old one in a moving ceremony with Para Vic Thorne lowering the old flag and raising the new one.

This event has a lasting ‘village’ theme, which combines solemn remembrance with a joyful reunion of veterans from His Majesty’s Airborne Forces, and where villagers join relatives and remember together..

The event will feature a service of remembrance. In the early and middle years of Double Hills, veterans and comrades of the fallen were still alive and engaged with their next of kin in sharing memories. Now, the children of those veterans and fallen are elderly but remain friends, with their younger families now, and they continue to meet annually at Double Hills.


This village event is a unique mix of military, church, civilian, school, cadet, guide, and scout representatives. The names of the fallen will be read, hymns will be sung, and poems will be read by children and the next of kin. At the heart of the event is a moving wreath-laying ceremony.
