No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom. All demonstration equipment is controlled and inspected by the instructor before use. There is no live fire requirement for the permit to purchase. If you would like to book live fire in addition to your Permit to Purchase class that is an additional, optional class.Written examThe written exam is administered at the end of the course:Students will complete a multiple‑choice exam using a bubble‑sheet answer form.Three versions of the exam are used; all bubble sheets are collected at the end of the test.A passing score is 80% or higher.If you score 79% or below, you will be required to retake the exam using a different version.You may retake the exam if you do not pass on the first attempt, subject to time and scheduling constraints set by the instructor.The instructor will grade the exams and review key questions and concepts with the class.Hands‑on practical exam (pass/fail)After submitting your written exam, you will complete a hands‑on practical evaluation focused on safe semiautomatic handling. You must successfully perform the following five actions to pass:Remove the magazine.Lock the slide or bolt to the rear (open the action).Physically and visually check the chamber and magazine well to confirm they are empty.Correctly apply a locking mechanism (cable lock, trigger lock, etc.).Maintain proper muzzle discipline and trigger‑finger discipline throughout the process.The practical exam is evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Failure to complete these steps safely and correctly will require remediation and may require you to repeat the practical.Completion, records, and permitsStudents who pass both the written exam and the hands‑on practical will be recorded as having successfully completed the course:The instructor will enter passing students into the state database within 3 business days.Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs/gun shops) can verify completion through this system when you purchase a qualifying firearm.After course completion, you may apply for your Permit to Purchase specified semiautomatic firearms in any Colorado county, regardless of your county of residence.
