At small village halls in the rolling Appalachian hills west of Quebec’s Chaudière River, anglophone and francophone dancers and musicians have moved to the region’s singsong dance calls for over 150 years. In this bilingual Heritage Talk, we will feature a live oral history interview with Kinnear’s Mills caller and pianist James Allan alongside archival video and audio recordings from the Fonds Jean Trudel project (University of Toronto, Conseil Québécois du Patrimoine Vivant) to explore to past and present of Megantic County square dance. The presentation will be followed by a square dance featuring live music by James Allan (piano and calls) and Lennoxville fiddler Courtney Drew.
