On Wednesday, February 18, Ukrainian ex-prisoner of war Oleksii Anulia will be welcomed at the Hague branch of Leiden University at 5:00 PM to share his experiences. Oleksii was tortured in Russia for almost a year and endured it with almost superhuman strength. After his release, through an exchange with a Russian prisoner, Oleksii required 33 surgeries to regain normal mobility. He lost almost 50% of his weight. His back was broken in several places, causing him to lose 7 cm in height.

The book "True Courage: The Struggle of Ukrainians" (published by Aspekt) contains a summary (chapter 25) of what Oleksii endured. Oleksi will speak about this period and urges young Europeans, in particular, to be vigilant against the aggressor.
Following his account, Joris Voorhoeve will briefly analyze the chances of a swift end to the war. The meeting will conclude around 7:00 PM after questions and discussion.

Admission is free if you wish to identify yourself to University security at 5:00 PM, entrance Campus The Hague, Wijnhaven, Turfmarkt 99, 2511 DP The Hague. Due to crowds in the city center, it is best not to come by car or to park elsewhere in The Hague.

Bijzondere namiddagbijeenkomst over Oekraïne op Woensdag 18 februari, 17:00 tot 19:30 u in Den Haag

Op Woensdag 18 februari wordt de Oekraïense ex-krijgsgevangene Oleksii Anulia ontvangen op de Haagse vestiging van de Universiteit Leiden om 17:00 om zijn ervaringen met ons te delen. Oleksii is bijna een jaar lang in Rusland gemarteld en heeft dit doorstaan met een vrijwel bovenmenselijke geestkracht. Na zijn vrijlating, door uitruil tegen een Russische gevangene, had Oleksii 33 operaties nodig om zich weer normaal te kunnen bewegen. Hij had bijna 50% van zijn gewicht verloren. Zijn rug was op enkele plaatsen gebroken waardoor hij 7 cm lichaamslengte verloor.

In het boek Ware Moed: de strijd van Oekraïners (uitgeverij Aspekt) staat een samenvatting (hoofdstuk 25) van wat Oleksii heeft doorstaan. Oleksi spreekt over deze periode en roept vooral de Europese jongeren op tot waakzaamheid jegens de agressor.

Na zijn relaas houdt Joris Voorhoeve een korte analyse van de kansen op een spoedig einde van de oorlog. De bijeenkomst wordt na vragen en discussie omstreeks 19:00 uur afgesloten
U krijgt gratis toegang als u zich wilt legitimeren bij de beveiliging van de Universiteit om 17:00 uur, ingang Campus Den Haag, Wijnhaven, Turfmarkt 99, 2511 DP Den Haag. Wegens drukte in de binnenstad kunt u het beste niet met de auto komen, of elders in Den Haag parkeren.
