RAVEN

RAVEN is een heavy metalband uit Newcastle upon Tyne (Noordoost-Engeland), opgericht in 1974 door de broers Gallagher. Na jaren in pubs en clubs werd de bezetting in 1980 vast met drummer Rob Hunter, waarna het trio uitgroeide tot een bepalende naam binnen de New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). Ze brachten drie invloedrijke albums uit — Rock Until You Drop, Wiped Out en All For One — die hun reputatie in de scene versterkten. RAVEN speelde bovendien een directe rol in de vroege livegeschiedenis van Metallica en Anthrax door hen hun eerste tours te geven. In 2025 verscheen hun 16e studioalbum Can’t Take Away The Fire via Silver Lining Music, met de Gallagher-broers (zang/bas en gitaar) en drummer Mike Heller (ex-Fear Factory).

VORTEX

Vortex geldt sinds de jaren tachtig als een van de belangrijkste heavy metalbands van Groningen én Nederland. De band ontstond in 1979 als rockband, maar ontwikkelde zich al snel richting hardrock en heavy metal. In 1982 maakte Vortex een doorstart en koos de band vol overtuiging voor de sound van de New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Met demo’s als First Flight of the Bats en Metallic Dawning en de klassiekers Metal Bats (1985) en Open the Gate (1986) groeide Vortex uit tot een vaste waarde binnen de Nederlandse metalscene. Vooral de videoclip van Open the Gate, opgenomen in Bourtange, zorgde voor internationale aandacht.

Na een periode van stilte keerde Vortex eind jaren 90 terug en bouwde de band een grote fanbase op, vooral in Duitsland en Spanje. In 2019 vierde Vortex het 40-jarig bestaan met Them Witches. Na het overlijden van oprichter Martjo Brongers kwam een einde aan Vortex.
