Join us for a presentation about Bill Wittliff's photography and view rarely seen images of the vaqueros from his photo archive. Presented by Carla Ellard, photography curator at The
Wittliff Collections, Texas State University, the talk is in support of the exhibition, Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy, provided by Humanities Texas.

In the early 1970s Bill Wittliff was invited to witness one of the last traditional roundups on the vast Rancho Tule in northern Mexico, and he fixed the vanishing vaquero tradition forever in nearly 5,000 photographs taken over a period of three years.

Wittliff photographed the vaqueros as they went about daily chores that had changed little
since the first Mexican cowherders learned to work cattle from a horse's back. Wittliff captured a way of life that now exists only in memory and in the photographs
included in this exhibition.

The exhibition features sixty-two digital carbon prints with bilingual narrative text that reveal the muscle, sweat and drama that went into roping a calf in thick brush or breaking a
wild horse in the saddle.
