Sunday Gathering: The Danger of Ideologies (Even Humanist Ones)

In her provocative new book “The Ideological Brain,” Dr. Leor Zmigrod reveals how our brains are biologically wired for ideological vulnerability. Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience, Zmigrod shows that our innate tendency to detect patterns, even illusory ones, and our deep dependence on social cohesion make us highly susceptible to belief systems that promise absolute explanations and rigid moral codes.

Once these ideologies take root, they can dramatically narrow our capacity for critical thinking, imagination, and even influence what we perceive and pay attention to. What does it mean to have an “ideological brain,” and how can we resist its pull?
