Popular Political Preferences: Applying Global Models to the Caucasian Context

What are the key factors that affect voters’ priorities and preferences? Political parties in the Caucasus, scholars have noted, have typically been based on personalities and less on ideological positions. Recent work, however, has pointed to the solidification of political identities in Georgia and Armenia based on geopolitical preferences, as well as economic and other pragmatic concerns. Considering a public opinion poll conducted in Georgia, this project, co-authored with Jesse Driscoll and Dan Maliniak, provides insights into the demand-side of Georgian politics, contemplating the relative power of populism and polarization, within the larger contexts of global trends in mass-level political behavior. 

 
Julie A. George is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Queens College and the Graduate Center, CUNY and Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University. She studies and writes about, among other things, politics, identity, and governance in the Caucasus, especially Georgia.  She serves on the Editorial Boards of Caucasus Studies, Communist and Postcommunist Studies, and Nationalities Papers.
