But what if that gadget malfunctions, gets wet, or is batt-dead? What now?

It's time to depend on the good ol' compass. It might just save you from literally getting lost. 
It is simple and doesn't have the complexities of, say a GPS that might be confusing to many. 

Now, the bad comes to worse. Your compass becomes useless because it broke or maybe you dropped it and nowhere to be found or you totally don't have one.

Then it's time to depend on something that is always there, doesn't malfunction and doesnt need batteries. Nature.

What to bring:
- baseplate compass
- 2' sticks x 2 or trekking poles if you have
- notepad and pen and/or pencil
- 12" transparent ruler
- transparent protractor
- and your usual 2-day climb stuff
