The NorthEast Michigan Rocket Association will hold its next model rocket launch and demonstration in Tawas at 9:00am Saturday, August 16 at Tawas HS football field.
The club goals are for kids (of all ages) to have fun while also learning the science and math behind rockets. Enthusiasts can bring their own rockets and the club provides all necessary supplies and equipment, and the expertise to launch the rockets safely. Beginners are encouraged to select a club rocket and work with mentors to prep the rocket for flight. They are briefed on launch procedures, place the rocket on the launch pad, and lead the countdown. The “finale” is they get to push the launch button and watch as their rocket whooshes off the launch pad. The rocket reaches apogee, the parachute deploys, and the rocket floats gently back to earth to be used again and again.
The club provides age appropriate rocket kits for kids to take home and build, so they can return another day and fly their own rocket. Kids 10 and older have the attention span to build their own rockets with a little adult supervision, moms and dads may find they end up building the rockets for their 5-9 year olds.
The club will host rocket programs for scout groups, 4H, church youth groups, and home school groups.
The club is a chapter of the National Association of Rocketry and started in 2022 in Oscoda The first Tawas launch was last October, and the plan is to alternate Tawas and Oscoda launches this year. The preliminary schedule is

Monday May 26 (Memorial Day), Saturday June 21, Saturday July 19, Saturday August 16
Oscoda High School (Soccer field)
Saturday May 31, Saturday July 5, Saturday August 2, Monday Sept 1 (Labor day).
Launches can be delayed by rain or winds >15 mph, check the NorthEast Michigan Rocket Association facebook page for weather delays. The Tawas field can accommodate flights to about 500 feet, Oscoda to about 800 feet in calm winds. Model rockets can go much higher but risk being blown into nearby trees.
