Making a Bird Collage with Suzette Smart
One-Day Textile Workshop
Join textile artist Suzette Smart for a creative and inspiring one-day workshop exploring the art of fabric collage and hand stitching. During this session, you’ll create a charming textile bird that can be pinned to a larger piece of work or to a vintage quilt, combining old and new textiles in a truly personal way.
Suzette will begin by sharing her creative process and demonstrating how to build a beautiful collage background using a mix of fabrics. You’ll then choose from a selection of bird templates, or, if you prefer, sketch your own design to bring to life.
Next, you’ll learn a variety of hand stitching techniques to add texture, pattern, and character to your bird. Suzette will guide you through thread selection and mark-making ideas, and if you’d like, you can also experiment with some free machine stitching.
Once your bird is complete and you’re happy with your creation, Suzette will show you how to back and finish your piece, adding a safety pin or brooch back so it can be attached to fabric or displayed on its own.
Please bring along a piece of old linen, a work in progress, or remnants from past quilt projects to pin your bird to — the perfect way to give new life to treasured textiles.
Please bring your own sewing kit/scissors etc.
£75 to include hot drinks throughout the day, biscuits & cake. Please bring a packed lunch, although we will break for lunch. Full payment required.
