Music for string quartet and organ will be performed by The Atlanta Virtuosi on Sunday October 19, 2025, as part of Big Canoe Chapel’s Music in the Mountain’s 2025-2026 Concert Series. The program will feature works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Soler, Anton Dvořák, Johann Pachelbel (the famous Canon), and Juan Ramírez. The recital is at 4 pm at Big Canoe Chapel, 226 Wolfscratch Village Circle, Jasper GA. 

There is no charge for admission to this concert, although contributions are gratefully received; donations from the series’ patrons cover the expenses of these concerts. Donations can also be mailed to Big Canoe Chapel, 10455 Big Canoe, Jasper GA 30143, earmarked for Music in the Mountains.

Participating in the concert are violinists Juan Ramírez, Olga Shpitko, and Courtney Vega-King, violist Catherine Price Allain, cellist David Ramirez and Big Canoe Chapel organist Calvert Johnson. Ramírez and Shpitko are also members of the Atlanta Symphony, and Price Allain is a member of the Atlanta Opera Orchestra.

The Atlanta Virtuosi Foundation was founded in 1977 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with these goals: educating young people and the general community through its varied music programs, and outreach partnerships with educational institutions and public schools. The Atlanta Virtuosi Foundation, under the leadership of its Founder and Artistic Director, Juan R. Ramírez, serves the cultural needs of the constantly growing metro Atlanta community. The mission of the Atlanta Virtuosi Foundation, Inc. is to make available a whole musical education that presents opportunities for professional musicians and young music students to participate in orchestral instrumental arts and to create an environment that is nurturing and stimulating through an artistically literate education. The continued objective is to provide more in-depth traditional, classical and cultural music experiences for the diverse metro Atlanta area.  This enriched music performance organization is designed to meet the increased demand for a professionally supervised youth orchestra which provides a variety of opportunities for growing numbers of students and creates an environment for young musicians to enhance their technical skills in instrumental instruction. Since its inception in 1977 the Atlanta Virtuosi Foundation has developed and established many programs, enhancing the overall metro Atlanta community. Activities include Chamber music concerts, The Buckhead Youth Orchestra, Music for Success! - An outreach program for Metro-Atlanta Public Schools, Educational concerts for young children entitled “From Cri-Cri to Mozart,” Orchestral Studies, Scholarships Opportunities for young music students, Festival Latino “Latin Festival,” and International Concert Tours. Many of the members of the Atlanta Virtuosi are also performers with the Atlanta Symphony. 

Founder Juan Ramirez, a central figure in the Atlanta musical community for decades, is a violinist, composer and conductor who began his musical education in Mexico, later moving to the United States to study with Joseph Silverstein at the New England Conservatory. His studies with Henryk Szeryng began at the age of fourteen and continued as he became his principal mentor in Mexico, the U.S. and Europe. Under the tutelage of conductor Leon Barzin, Ramírez was the recipient of both the Serge Koussevitzky and Leonard Bernstein awards at the Tanglewood Music Festival.

Mr. Ramírez has performed and conducted in numerous countries throughout Europe and Asia, as well as in Israel and Mexico. The distinguished composer-conductor Gunther Schuller stated his “unqualified faith in Mr. Ramírez as a violinist and a musical leader of great artistic integrity” and noted that “whatever he undertakes is touched by quality.”

He has won numerous awards and honors along the way, including Lexus Leader of the Arts by WABE Public Radio of Atlanta and WPBA Television for “his outstanding contributions, his pursuit of excellence in music and for his initiating and serving several community music organizations in the arts community”, the Loridans Arts Award, and the Governor’s Award in the Humanities.

In addition to his extensive career as a performer and conductor, Ramírez is also a prolific composer incorporating the sounds of his native Mexico into his works. His compositions include Anahuac for tenor, soprano, winds, strings, and pre-Columbian percussion, commissioned in 1993 by the ACOG –Cultural Olympiad as part of ¡MEXICO! A Cultural Tapestry. Ramírez’ Suite Criolla for tenor, soprano, chorus, narrator and orchestra debuted in 1995 at the Hispanic Festival of the Arts, and his Navidad Hispana for solo guitar and orchestra was given its premiere by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with the composer as the guitar soloist. Ramírez’ Suite Huasteca for violin, strings and guitar earned critical acclaim in both the U.S. and Mexico, and in 2008 received its European premiere in Barcelona, Spain. His Elegy for violin and piano was written in memory of the Holocaust and received its world premiere at the Temple in Atlanta during the 70th commemoration of “Kristallnacht” 1938-2008 the Day of the Broken Glass. Ramírez was featured as guest composer for his US world premiere of Suite Latina for string quartet and string orchestra at the Bellingham Festival of Music, Washington.

Mr. Ramírez has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 1974 and is the founder and artistic director of the Atlanta Virtuosi Foundation, Buckhead Youth Orchestra, Casa de la Cultura-Atlanta, and is music director and conductor emeritus of the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra. 

Many of his commissioned compositions have been world premiered in Atlanta, New York, Budapest, Collonges sous Salève, Geneva and Monaco. 

Mr. Ramírez has served on the Board of Directors of Childhood Cancer, the Sphinx Organization and the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, and received the World Chamber of Commerce Cultural International Hero Award. Mr. Ramírez received in 2007 the Martin Luther King, Jr., César Chavez, Rosa Parks Visiting Professor from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He holds the title of “Presidential Professor” at the University of Michigan, the highest honor “given to visiting artists and scholars, recognizing distinguished individuals for their extraordinary achievements.” Mr. Ramirez was awarded the League of American Orchestras 2018 Ford Foundation Musician Award for Excellence in Community Service. He is very proud to have been awarded the 2018 Ohtli Award, one of the highest honors from the Mexican Government, recognizing individuals who have “aided, empowered or positively affected the lives of Mexican nationals in the United States and around the world”. Recently Mr. Ramírez was awarded by the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as one of “The 50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia."

Olga Shpitko has been a violinist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) since 2006. Born in L’viv, Ukraine, she received her Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and her Ph.D. from Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. While in Moscow, Shpitko toured many European countries with the Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Conservatory. She was Assistant Concertmaster of the "Young Russian" State Symphony Orchestra and performed as a soloist with the L'viv Symphony Orchestra. Shpitko has attended many festivals and played numerous concerts as a member of the contemporary music ensemble, "New Music Studio."

In 1995 she moved to Paris, France, to continue her professional studies, where she won first prize at the "Concours Musical Regional d'Ile de France" and second prize at the UNESCO 8th International Competition "Flame." Shpitko received the Lindred Scott Bendann Endowed Scholarship in Violin and the Heifetz Fund for Talented Young Musicians Award in 1997. Shpitko came to the United States to study at the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University.

Courtney Vega-King began her violin studies at age six and has enjoyed playing the violin since the early 1990s. In her formative years, Ms. Vega-King participated in various honorary orchestras and summer programs. While earning her bachelor’s degree at Emory University, Ms. Vega-King served as assistant principal second violin with the Emory Symphony Orchestra. In her performances with the symphony Ms. Vega-King has had the opportunity to be featured in a PBS special as well as to play at New York’s Lincoln Center.

Ms. Vega-King is deeply indebted to her many wonderful teachers, including Lisa Yancich of the Atlanta Symphony and Oliver Steiner, a violin professor at the Eastman School of Music for 20 years. While completing graduate work at the University of Georgia, Ms. Vega King studied with Valerie Gardner, Levon Ambartsumian and Shakhida Azimkhodjaeva.

Through a graduate assistantship to perform with ARCO Chamber Orchestra and UGA Symphony, Ms. Vega-King earned an M.M. degree in Violin Performance from the University of Georgia (2020). During her graduate work at UGA, Ms. Vega-King passed her degree exam with distinction and received the Director’s Excellence Award for exemplary scholarship, musicianship, service and leadership at the graduate level. Ms. Vega-King received the Eckstein Merit Scholarship and a graduate assistantship to complete an M.M. in Instrumental Music Education at Northwestern University (2023). Ms. Vega-King performed with the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra for the 2021-2022 season.

Ms. Vega-King has performed in orchestras throughout the southeast including the cities of Augusta, Greenville, and Asheville among others. Most recently, Ms. Vega-King received a scholarship in 2023 to perform chamber music in Italy through Orvieto Musica.

Ms. Vega-King has maintained a private violin and viola studio since the mid 2000s. Her private students’ accomplishments include membership and leadership positions in many youth orchestras and competitive programs such as Atlanta Youth Symphony, Governor’s Honors Program, and concertmaster positions in both GMEA All-State and Cobb County Honor Orchestra.

Born and raised in Statesboro, Georgia, Catherine Price Allain is active as a violinist and violist. Catherine's musical path started early, leading her to the Interlochen Arts Academy, the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern University. She was fortunate to learn from some wonderful teachers along the way, including Simin Ganatra and the Pacifica Quartet, Sandy Yamamoto, Roland and Almita Vamos, and Charles Pickler.

Her career has led her in many directions, from her time playing with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, music festivals in France and across Japan, to hitting the road for a year with the show Les Misérables. Currently, Catherine serves as Assistant Principal Viola with the Atlanta Opera Orchestra. In the summers she performs at the Hamptons Festival of Music. 

David Ramírez studied with Wendy Warner at Columbus State University and received his Artist Diploma degree with high honors in 2012. He completed post-graduate studies with Andrés Diaz at Southern Methodist University. David Ramírez performs in orchestras across the southeast and has toured internationally with orchestras in China.

David Ramírez has performed at the Calella International Music Festival in Spain and with Atlanta Virtuosi in France, Monaco, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. He has toured with his quartet, Primavera Strings, which performed with guitarist Felix Rodríguez in Puerto Rico. 

Concerts of Music in the Mountains are funded by generous donations, enabling anyone to attend. Contributions may be made to Big Canoe Chapel, 10455 Big Canoe, Big Canoe GA 30143, with the notation “Music in the Mountains” on the memo line.
