"Please note:This course needs to be booked via your team's Training Officer, as we need to ensure that we have 2 x teams of 3.Unfortunately, we cannot take bookings from individual team members.It's one booking per team and SMR Office will contact you for the nominated team members' details, as well as confirmation of the vehicle you will be bringing on the course and the tyres on the vehicle.Course contentWe are able to offer this course out to teams on the basis of 6 drivers, made up from 2 teams, i.e. 3 drivers per team.• List common off-road hazards• Describe how to safeguard the environment• Describe Health & Safety legislation for off-road drivers• Demonstrate vehicle checks• Demonstrate a controlled and safe working environment while off road• Identify the capabilities and limitations of 4 X 4 vehicles• Interpret differing types of terrain and negotiate using safe techniques• Describe and demonstrate the use of the technology available on a 4 X 4 vehicle (differential locks, ABS, Descent controls and Traction Control)• Understand the use of Exhaust Jacks and the benefits they bring.Venue & RequirementsAccommodationThe course will start at 1900hrs on Friday, 20th March 2026 at The Commercial Hotel, 19 The Square, Tarland AB34 4TX Ph: 01339 881922, followed by a day's driving on Saturday, 21st March 2026 at the 4x4 course in Alford, Aberdeenshire.Accommodation will be on a shared basis for the Friday evening and Saturday's breakfast will be included. Please note that no meal is provided by SMR on the Friday evening but the hotel serves bar meals.Things to BringTeam members will need to bring a team vehicle which meets the requirements of the course, i.e. if it's a Defender it needs to have ROPS. For this course the vehicle your team brings will need to have decent off-road tyres (all terrains as a minimum). Please liaise with the relevant person within your team, e.g. vehicle officer, to ensure the vehicle meets these requirements.You will need to provide your own packed lunch and enough drinks/snacks to keep you going on the day.You will also need to bring a helmet to wear whilst in the vehicle and your driving licence with categories appropriate to the vehicle you will drive.THE SMALL PRINT!These courses are extremely popular and we want to ensure that the places are well used. As such we would like 3 team members from each team attending the course. If someone has to cancel off, we would ask that someone else from the team attend. Therefore, when nominating the attendees, if may well be worth having someone in reserve :)Cancellation Policy:SMR reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee of £100 if failure to turn up to this course or a cancellation too late in which we cannot fill your space. This fee allows us to offset any costs which we will be incurred as a result of late cancellation.
