What do you get when you mix Jeff Scroggins (former National USA Bluegrass Banjo Champion and lead member of Jeff Scroggins and Colorado) with Matt Sircely (singer-songwriter, Bluegrass and Swing mandolinist who has recorded alongside David Grisman!) and Steve Holy (one of Canada’s very well known Jazz guitarists and bassists with works on 25 CDS and 2 LPS, and a receiver of 2 Canada Council Grants)? Well… the answer can only truly be realized by coming to this concert! But expect a night showcasing Jeff and Matt's most recent project in crafting a synergetic approach to Bluegrass and acoustic music. This collaboration unites two deeply credentialed masters of the acoustic string tradition who combine technical mastery with a shared dedication to the tradition and evolution of roots music. The duo (accompanied by bassist Steve Holy) presents a sophisticated ensemble with a sound that is firmly rooted in Bluegrass but draws from a variety of sources including traditional country, rock, swing, and original songwriting. WORKSHOPS The trio are also offering musician workshops at the the venue from 4:00pm to 5:30pm prior to the concert. The workshop portion is $40 for 90 minutes. JEFF SCROGGINS - Bluegrass Banjo Workshop jvbanjo5@gmail.com Jeff Scroggins has won more than 50 banjo contests, including the prestigious National (USA) Bluegrass Banjo Championship. In 1996 he was inducted into the Texas Tornadoes music society. His work as a bandleader has earned numerous accolades, including the Emerging Artist of the Year award from the California Bluegrass Association, and an emerging artist nomination from the International Bluegrass Music Association. His original compositions, such as "Dismal Nitch" and "Jalapeño Flashback," showcase a rare facility for blending traditional bluegrass drive with his rock and roll roots, utilizing complex harmonic voicings MATT SIRCELY - Mandolin Workshop mattsircely@gmail.com Matt Sircely (Port Townsend, WA) Based on the Olympic Peninsula, Matt Sircely is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose work has been described as "Timeless" by No Depression. A founding member of the influential swing ensemble Hot Club Sandwich, Sircely’s recordings have reached the Top 30 on national Jazz, Folk, and Jamband charts. Sircely utilizes a vast "toolkit" of mandolin techniques, from delicate tremolo to orchestral backup, providing a rich, textured foundation for the duo’s intricate arrangements. STEVE HOLY - Bass Workshop bokudozen@gmail.com Bassist and Guitarist A native of Kingston Ontario, Steve Holy has been playing guitar since 1971 and double bass since 1986. Educated at York and McGill Universities, Steve has since played with many of Canada’s finest jazz musicians. Known for his deep groove, warm tone and creative approach, Steve helps create a supportive and supple foundation in any ensemble.
