Runoja ei ole alkujaan kirjoitettu, vaan ne ovat kerätty ja sommiteltu Lahtisen Alzheimerin tautiin sairastuneen äidin puheesta. Kuvitus on koostettu äidin kotialbumeista ja lähimetsästä otetuista valokuvista. Näyttely esittelee teoksen ympärille luotuja monitaiteellisia yhteisteoksia neljältä eri tekijältä. 

Teokset kuvaavat Alzheimerin tautia siihen sairastuneen ihmisen näkökulmasta ja pyrkivät antamaan hänelle äänen. Ne tarjoavat aavistuksia siitä, miten muistisairas voi kokea ympäristönsä taudin edetessä. Tautiin liittyy puheen sekavuus ja havaintojen epämääräisyys. Näitä oireita Lahtinen käsittelee myös runoteoksen jälkisanoissa – teos on luettavissa ja ostettavissa näyttelyn yhteydessä.

Lahtinen ja Nevanperä ovat uudelleen sommitelleet runoja ja kuvitusta teossarjoiksi ja toisinnoiksi, jotka kuvaavat muistisairaan ihmisen kognitiivisten taitojen heikentymistä. Materiaalia on yhdistetty myös ikääntyville suositeltuihin muistiharjoitteisiin: ristisanatehtävät, logiikkapeli sudoku ja palapelit kuuluivat Lahtisen äidin harrastuksiin jo ennen hänen sairastumistaan. 

Muusikko Risto Ylihärsilän säveltämässä ja sovittamassa kuunnelmassa kokoelman runot on yhdistetty äänimaisemaan, jossa sekä nykyinen ja mennyt limittyvät toisiinsa aivan kuten valokuvissakin. Ääninäyttelijöinä esiintyvät Maria Myllylä ja Ilta Purmonen.

Kirjailija ja kirjantekijä Antti Nylénin ja Lahtisen kohopainokoneella toteuttamassa taiteilijakirjassa Puut ovat kuvataan taudin etenemistä sekä sanojen hidasta katoamista riisumalla alkuperäinen runoteos minimalistiseen muotoon. Sivujen suuri valkoinen tila jää vaatimaan huomiota, ikään kuin se ei olisikaan vain tyhjyyttä.

Jokaisen runon, kuvan ja äänen miljöönä toimii metsä, jossa säkeet on poimittu äidin ja pojan yhteisillä kävelyretkillä. Tämä metsä jäi sairastuneen äidin viimeiseksi vapauden saarekkeeksi, turvapaikaksi, jolla hän sai liikkua myös yksin ja rauhassa. 

Näyttely kuvaa paitsi luopumista myös äidinrakkautta, läsnäolon merkitystä ja elämän ihmeellisyyttä. Samalla teokset avaavat uusia näkökulmia metsiin ja metsäsuhteisiin.

Puut ovat täynnä lapsia on järjestetty yhteistyössä Pirkanmaan Muistiyhdistys ry:n kanssa. Galleriassa pidetään keskustelutilaisuus 28.2. aiheesta muistisairaudet ja taide. Panelisteina ovat Toni Lahtinen, Antti Nylén sekä yhdistyksen toiminnanjohtaja Teija Siipola.

Taiteilijoiden työskentelyä ja näyttelyä ovat tukeneet WSOY:n kirjallisuussäätiö, TAIKE, Majaoja-säätiö sekä tutkimushanke Kynä, jolla kirjoitan, on kaadettu puu. Kotimaisen nykykirjallisuuden tuottama tieto metsistä ja metsäsuhteista osana metsäkulttuurista kestävyysmurrosta (Koneen Säätiö 2025–2027). 

Runoteos Puut ovat täynnä lapsia palkittiin Tampereen kaupungin kirjallisuuspalkinnolla vuonna 2025.

THE TREES ARE FULL OF CHILDREN

The Trees Are Full of Children is based on a poetry-art book published in 2024 by poet and literary scholar Toni Lahtinen and visual artist Lotta Nevanperä. The poems were not originally written but gathered and composed from the speech of Lahtinen’s mother, who was living with Alzheimer’s disease. The visual material is drawn from her personal photo albums and photographs taken in a nearby forest. The exhibition presents interdisciplinary collaborative works created around the book by four artists.

The works depict Alzheimer’s disease from the perspective of the person affected, seeking to give voice to lived experience. They offer glimpses into how a person with a memory disorder may perceive their surroundings as the illness progresses. Disordered speech and blurred perception are characteristic symptoms of the disease, themes Lahtinen also addresses in the book’s afterword. The poetry book is available to read and purchase in connection with the exhibition.

Lahtinen and Nevanperä have reworked the poems and images into series and variations that reflect the gradual deterioration of cognitive abilities. The material is also combined with memory exercises commonly recommended for older adults. Crossword puzzles, sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles were among Lahtinen’s mother’s hobbies even before the onset of her illness.

In an audio work composed and arranged by musician Risto Ylihärsilä, the poems are interwoven with a soundscape in which past and present overlap—much like they do in the photographs. The voice actors are Maria Myllylä and Ilta Purmonen.

In the artist’s book Puut ovat, created by writer and bookmaker Antti Nylén and Lahtinen using a letterpress printing press, the progression of the disease and the slow disappearance of words are explored by stripping the original poetry work down to a minimalist form. The expansive white space of the pages demands attention, as if it were not merely emptiness.

The forest serves as the shared setting for every poem, image, and sound. The verses were gathered during walks taken together by mother and son. For the mother living with Alzheimer’s, this forest became her final island of freedom—a place of refuge where she could still move independently and in peace.

The exhibition speaks not only of loss, but also of maternal love, the significance of presence, and the wonder of life. At the same time, it opens new perspectives on forests and human relationships with them.

The Trees Are Full of Children is organised in collaboration with the Memory association of Pirkanmaa. A public discussion on memory disorders and art will be held at the gallery on 28 February, featuring Toni Lahtinen, Antti Nylén, and the association’s Executive Director, Teija Siipola.

The artists’ work and the exhibition have been supported by the WSOY Literary Foundation, Arts Promotion Centre Finland (TAIKE), the Majaoja Foundation, and the research project The pencil I write with is a felled tree: knowledge produced by contemporary Finnish literature about fForests and human-forest relationships as part of the cultural sustainability transformation (Kone Foundation 2025–2027).
