- **Event Description**: This Sunday, August 23rd, Sacrilegious Cinema: Menagerie of Madness presents a devilish duo catapulting audiences into the mind of maniac and resident serial killer ‘Josef’ through found footage documentation, boasting a pivotal entry inscribed in the 2010s horror landscape, launching its equally impressive sequel as well as a 3 part anthology series in the wake of its success. Creep struts in style, emerging among the mumblegore movement in its naturalistic setting and raw realism, resonating with viewers in its simple premise amidst a stellar execution. ????

At 8PM, we meet Aaron, a struggling videographer that pursues an online job listing to film at a secluded cabin in Crestline, California for the day; upon meeting the client, Josef, Aaron learns the man is terminally ill with an inoperable brain tumor and wants a video diary for his unborn son to cherish, as he is expected to pass prior to his delivery. But as Aaron begins to fulfill his request, he grows increasingly uncomfortable with Josef’s growing eccentricities. Despite this reluctance, Josef continues to exhibit progressively disturbing behavior, exploiting Aaron’s decorum to see how far he can push his boundaries without abandoning the project, although matters ultimately take a sinister turn for the worst.
CREEP (2014) crafts an unsettling account of predator and prey, allowing audiences to peer into a serial killer’s Modus operandi with first person tapes, primarily shot through the lens of the target, effectively plummeting viewers into the predicament. Patrick Brice’s low-budget indie directional debut makes a splash against contemporaries, reimagining the found footage sub-genre, bestowing the protagonist with motive to fully utilize the believability of the following events, with the titular Creep capitalizing on social etiquette and niceties to ensnare his victims, often peppering their interactions with obvious clues to his nefarious nature with enough room for reasonable doubt to linger. Creep excels in the fear factor in the mundanity of the story, favoring the aforementioned to the fantastical— the plausibility making it all the more terrifying. Harking back to Craigslist culture, this cult classic perfectly balances horror riddled with dark humor, exuding this intentional awkwardness to mount anxieties in its ambiguity. Exacerbating these ever present qualities, the titular Creep himself, flawlessly bodied by Mark Duplass, wields an unnerving charisma, constantly walking the line between menace and gauche in his provocations. Creep submits a study in vulnerability and isolation, investigating the weaponization of courtesy through a myriad of manipulation tactics including guilt and gaslighting to wear down the parameters of politeness in the face of taunting. Moreover, Creep employs elements of social norms, deconstructing the phenomenon wherein a person picks potential peril to certain safety at the expense of not coming off as rude, valuing others’ comfort over self security.

Then, at 10PM, we meet YouTube blogger, Sarah, after her response to an ad seeking a videographer to a distant cabin to film for the day. Once Sarah meets the customer- a man called ‘Aaron’ (Josef)- he quickly admits his occupation as a serial killer, agreeing to allow her to live under the condition that she documents his life for the next 24 hours; Sarah accepts in spite of this frightening revelation, unconvinced of his lethal status by his claims, instead hoping it will revive her failing web series. As the day goes on, Aaron has trouble striking terror in his newfound prey, with Sarah often playing along with his rouses and matching his energy to his utter chagrin— although these setbacks do not deter Aaron from his persistent cat and mouse antics.
Patrick Brice’s CREEP 2 (2017) is a worthy sequel to the original hit flick, proving boundless territory exists to explore with our eponymous killer, this time switching gears from the original material and subverting the narrative rather than rehashing its predecessor with fresh meat. This chapter maintains integrity, including its initial themes of vulnerability and customs, though treks into commentary on content creation, delving into the risks one will take to go viral in a social media obsessed world. Viewers are treated to a psychoanalysis of both Sarah and Josef, showcasing two different sides of the same coin, with Sarah as a less ‘passive’ victim than her previous counterpart. The script is successfully flipped, with both parties hungry for exploitation- whether it is for bloodlust or a fixation on fame- the pair utilize deceit to meet their end goals. Mark Duplass returns as the maniacal madman audiences fell for in the first feature, although this edition shows us another side of Josef, reintroduced on the edge of a midlife crisis and experiencing a lull in his love for the K*ll in a desperate plea to reignite his passion for homicide. Furthermore, a Jungian duality is injected between Josef and his alter ego
'Peachfuzz', excising the dichotomy among man and monster with the expedition of the shadow self in this psychological masterclass in tension.

Come out and see what all the hype is about at Hot Wax Ybor, where we’ll be honoring our manager for his very special (birth)day with his favorite sensual serial killer.
