  At 8PM, we trek to Japan and meet theology scholar Shirō and his friend Tamura following a hit and run, triggering a chain of events involving a devious doppelgänger, ultimately culminating in the band of sinners gathering at the Gates of Hell for the last act where they must pay for their sins in pain— their souls serving as currency. 
  JIGOKU: SINNERS OF HELL (1960) harvests a study on culpability and guilt, painting a portrait of the underworld in the last half of the film, exploring devilish delights influenced by the Japanese rendition of the Buddhist netherworld (Naraka) to inform this phantasmagorical nightmare. Departing from the previous decades’ discipline with carnage, Jigoku unapologetically depicts a merciless  landscape of anguish and affliction, amping up the gore and finessing special effects successfully distancing itself from contemporaries. Director Nobuo Nakagawa expertly wields cosmology rooted in Genshin’s medieval texts coupled with the Hell Scroll, encompassing the 16 subdivisions of Hell, tackling earthly ramifications and retribution through surreal suffering in a beautifully morbid display. This cult gem hosts grisly graphics amidst an eerie atmosphere of avant-Garde chords fused with traditional notes echoing the cavernous cruelty furnished by the infernal hellscapes. 🇯🇵👹🪷

   Then, at 10PM, we embark to Italy and step into the 9 Circles of Hell alongside Dante, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. Sink into limbo, then traverse the blistering storms of Lust’s dominion, eventually braving the Stygian tides of the fifth circle until reaching the icy depths to find Lucifer himself chewing on the heads of traitors to punctuate the punishment for their inquiries.     
  L’INFERNO (1911) emerges as a pioneer of horror cinema, hailing from the silent era of film harboring the distinction of being Italy’s first full-length feature, as well as the first to adapt Dante Alighieri’s epic poem The Divine Comedy, honoring the Inferno canticle to celluloid. 
Arising as a collaboration among directors Francesco Bertolini, Giuseppe de Liguoro, and Adolfo Padovan, L’Inferno offers a visceral illustration of Hell through a show of impressive practical effects that continue to endure by today’s standards, drawing inspiration for the iconography in ambitious recreations of Gustave Doré’s famous companion artwork accompanying the original text. The haunting visuals need no dialogue to speak for the impact L’Inferno bears on viewers, with imagery that etches itself deep within the psyche, altering the way in which Western society perceives Hell since its conception, reinforcing the classic literature with ghastly optics adorned in uncanny melodies. L’Inferno presents a perilous voyage to sin and salvation, cataloguing virtue from vice- with the latter’s adjoining penalties at the forefront of this deadly descent- delighting in the transgressions of the flesh with explicit scenes of unrestrained torture, sensational for the time.
