Spiegel im Spiegel: Encounters Between Estonian and German Art from Lucas Cranach to Arvo Pärt and Gerhard Richter

The exhibition “Spiegel im Spiegel“ is an ambitious cooperation project between the Art Museum of Estonia and the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlumngen Dresden, SKD), taking the viewer on a journey through Estonian and German art and history. While reflecting the complexity of those relations and issues of colonial power and mentality, the exhibition also highlights the cultural intertwining of German, Baltic-German and Estonian art.

The exhibition sets up encounters between the oeuvres of Arvo Pärt and Gerhard Richter, August Matthias Hagen and Caspar David Friedrich, Eduard Wiiralt and Otto Dix, Konrad Mägi and Max Pechstein, Ülo Sooster and Joseph Beuys, and many other outstanding Estonians and Germans.

The Future is in One Hour: Estonian Art in the 1990s

The exhibition departs from the rupture caused in the Estonian society by the end of the Cold War and the regaining of independence. In Estonia, the 1990s were a transition era. The country had been freed from the Soviet Union (1991) and began to rebuild a liberal democratic society based on a market economy. The focus of the exhibition is on new media (photography, videography and installation art) which caused a major shift in the art scene of the day.

Landscapes of Identity: Estonian Art 1700–1945

The permanent exhibition “Landscapes of Identity: Estonian Art 1700–1945” tells the story of Estonian art as it evolved through Estonia’s multi-ethnic history, growing into a heritage that blends Estonian, Baltic German and Russian traditions. The focus is on the role of art in society and in shaping the identities of diverse communities.

Triumph of Galatea: Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

The international group exhibition, referring to the myth of Pygmalion in its title, examines the changes and developments in human experience in culture and society in connection with the onslaught of new technologies.

Karin Luts: Pictures from Travels

Through drawings, paintings and diaries, this exhibition studies the importance of travelling in the life and work of the artist Karin Luts (1904–1993). According to tradition, Luts recorded her travel impressions as drawings or watercolours, and sometimes on canvas. She did not consider her travel scenes to be real art, but something similar to photography, the only difference being the manual recording. The exhibition, which introduces the work of one of the most outstanding Estonian women artists at the beginning of the last century, focuses on watercolours and sketches from trips to Italy, Spain, France and her new homeland, Sweden.
